seem to transcend trends in decor. These two modern homes have been accented with blue hues on the brighter side of the spectrum to pick up the pace on white and pale grey neutrals. The energised blue accents shape chic yet edgy living rooms, accented with quirky art and unusual furniture pieces. We also take the tour into the bedroom and bathrooms of these stylish homes–one of which is an inspired centrally placed ensuite design held between glass walls. Stick around for the floor plans of these unique one bed apartments too, each measuring just under 90 square metres.

Visualizer:Anna Sergeeva
Located in St. Petersburg, Russia, this apartment was designed for a 30 year old female homeowner. The owner plans to rent out the apartment in a couple of years, so a neutral palette made the most sense. There are, however, some electric blue accent pieces that breathe life and upbeat energy into the interior, like this geo coffee table and solo blue accent cushion on the modern sofa .

There is also a blue accent wall, though this is awash with a more muted hue of blue with a grey undertone. A unique accent chair pairs up with the sofa to complete the compact lounge arrangement.

Blue seat cushions pop in the dining area behind the lounge, disrupting a calm grey kitchen.

A bank of storage cabinets occupy one side of the room…

…The units conceal a home workspace with a bold blue lining. The accent chair from the lounge doubles up as a desk chair when required.

In place of the obligatory TV, the focal point of this modern living room is a textured panel overlaid with contemporary artwork. Wall sconces accentuate the textured gypsum and showcase the paintings.

A modern pendant light falls above the small round dining table to boost its presence. See more dining room pendant lights here.

Glamorous tiles lay down an impressive walkway and welcome wall in the home entryway.

Blue vanity stool pick out the colour in the tile, and echo the circular silhouette of the mirror over a floating vanity table . An entryway bench provides an additional sitting spot for putting on shoes.

In the bedroom, light from a large window reflects in the glass orb shades of a modern sputnik chandelier .

Two bedroom pendant lights descend over one of the glam mirrored bedside units.

A monkey lamp swings over the other side.

A blush pink floral arrangement brings a touch of sweet romance to the scheme.

Edgy artwork offsets the softer side of the room scheme. Heavy grey drapes fall at a large window and balcony doors.

A botanical splashback grows at a modern bathroom vanity , scattering green fronds behind a round wall mirror.

White marble tiles stop at half height around the room, struck through with grey and golden vein. A natural rattan laundry basket draws out the warmer tones.

Apartment floor plan.

This 85 square metre apartment is located in the historical part of Kharkov, Ukraine. It was created for a client who works in the field of design and architecture. The owner decided the layout, and set out project criteria for functionality and maximum architectural purity of space.

Visualizer:Studio Open
Multiple windows pull in natural light and add a sense of spaciousness. Blue sofas and side tables have been moved away from the edge of the room to amplify the effect, instead amassing as an island in the centre of the floor.

Each side table stands snugly within the elbow of sectional chaises and backrests. The layout is pared back and pure, determined primarily by its functionalism.

One piece that does hug the wall is a decorative Volta Stockholm Mobile , created by Otxo and Mario Conti. These timeless mobiles are built in Barcelona, born from metal and steel.

Since the apartment building has a classic facade, stylised architectural motifs have been used to add character to the interior.

The metallic base of a pedestal dining table shimmers a luxe effect.

A modern dining table pendant light drops from a traditional ceiling rose.

Ultra modern dining chairs introduce a quirky silhouette.

A pure white kitchen falls quietly into the background of the living space.

The apartment building is constructed with walls more than half a meter thick, which gives the interior a sense of solidity. This effect was further exaggerated by installing massive partition walls.

White decor softens the geometry, along with notes of Mediterranean warmth.

Unconventional artwork sets an off-beat tone in the bedroom, including an astronaut figurine by the bedside. The metallic headboard reflects light into the room and elegantly counteracts the quirkiness. A modern chandelier drops from decorative ceiling arches, which bounce from window wall to a glass wall dressing room and bathroom.

A dissected KAWS statue injects neon colour into the bedroom scheme.

Silver drapes draw back to reveal the ensuite bathroom .

Half of the ensuite is home to a garment hanging rail, whilst the other contains an over-bath shower.

The shower is a unique freestanding design.

The bathroom has an unusual location in the centre of the apartment, which gives it a surreal sense of space. Moving a bathroom into a central position presents technical challenges with plumbing communications, which is why the bathroom has been raised on a podium.

The bath stands dead centre, whilst a modern pedestal sink stands up against one glass wall.

Matte white fixtures blend with the finish of the bathtub .

An elliptical motif shapes both the full length dressing mirror and a modern vanity mirror.

A small wooden stool brings the natural element to the bathroom.

The hallway runs between the ensuite bathroom and a separate WC.

Floor plan. The central location of the glass wall bathroom allows daylight to penetrate the narrow, windowless corridor.
The engineering team put 300 days of difficult trials into the construction process of this imaginative space, designed by SOAR Design Studio . The team worked with the owners of the property to complete a house with a unique flair. The piece went on to win the 2019 Japan Good Design Award, operated by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. Traditional ’rules’ and definitions were cast aside in favour of a new and exciting way of coexisting. Open space, flexible purpose, and vague floor boundaries, were offered in bridging separation of common and private areas. A labyrinth of sorts, navigating both the horizontal and vertical planes.

The ambiguous living room promotes movement and interaction between the inhabitants. Bespoke furniture adds layers of intrigue to the floor plan. A simple bench seat offers a place to pause and read a book, look out onto the garden, lay down for a while, or sit in tandem for a chat.

Transient zones lead to novel interactions. The floating base of the staircase equates to another bench seat, whilst a low landing makes an elevated perch just low enough for comfortable exchanges with the ground floor.

Family life takes place surrounded by the changing of the seasons that tap against vast window panes. Regenerating trees and ephemeral weather shift the mood of the interior.

The interior is full of surprises. Groundbreaking suspension structures allow all private bedrooms to float independently and consecutively above the ground floor.

Free and organic common space on the ground floor is open to possibilities.

The configuration liberalises everyday life, shaping a new philosophy that dissolves public and private bubbles.

Rooms are no longer separated and defined.

There is a simplicity in the industrial style decor of the interior, yet it is full of atmosphere.

A single lounge chair injects modern chic into a small sitting area, situated by an entire wall of bespoke bookcases. A couple of lidded baskets make a convenient storage spot, and stack to serve as a side table too.

A second book stack creates a layered library setup, a room within a room. Small ornaments are interspersed between the tomes. Indoor plants add intervals of life and change.

The steel and wood staircase winds up toward the upper shelves of the made-to-measure bookcase wall. At the top, the treads finally morph into a long mezzanine library, where a watercolour painting marks a peaceful break in the book shelves.

Wood planks have been applied across part of the ceiling space to compliment the natural timber book stacks, as well as to accentuate interesting angles in the architecture.

Concrete flooring runs smoothly through the living space, connecting the library/lounge area with a formal dining setting.

A rattan basket stores linens by the bench seat, easy to grab when needing to chase the chill off.

Vague mezzanine suspensions uniquely interact with the creative and differentiated living space.

The oak wall shelves grow warm character in the industrial space. A rich walnut platform extends from the base of the central tower, a woodgrain island in a sea of concrete.

Internal windows connect concealed volumes with the open common space.

The revolutionary multi-level living environment hangs bedrooms aloft in an independent yet connecting configuration, like treehouses.

Shelves placed along the balustrades establish landing areas as more than mere connective passageways. These rests become living spaces, offering alternative surroundings for study and reflection. Down on the ground floor, plant stand s shake up the furniture layout, bringing feathered foliage to sharp edges.

The well-spaced structural system provides a creative way of living for modern families that is a complete departure from traditional architecture.

The floating trait of the upper volumes builds a living space that feels filled with movement and action.

The wooden ‘islands’ of the living room blend with the first floor floating characteristic.

A fissure between two suspended bedrooms cracks open directly above the rectangle dining table. The divide leaves a perfect gap for a dining room suspension light to fall dramatically all the way through.

Scenes of the garden border provide a calming green backdrop for the dining room.

Modern dining chairs flank the table three by three.

A minimalist centrepiece of pure white candles tops the table.

The disc-like dining room pendant light smoothly compliments the curved back dining chair design.

A black and grey kitchen cuts into a background of partially rendered exposed brickwork. A white SMEG fridge freezer blends with the light plaster.

The kitchen run pulls around in a large L-shaped configuration.

Black door and window surrounds frame garden views on three sides of the living room.

Connection with the outdoors prevails upstairs on the mezzanine library, and on to the private bedrooms.

Clerestory windows bring added light into the bathroom, to complement a low window down by a unique sunken bathtub .

Edison bulbs stylise lighting solutions.

Fluidity of space presents unique interplay.

Novel lamps add to the warm glow that subtly emits throughout the house.

Imperfections in the concrete walls only add wabi-sabi beauty.

The place seems to evoke a thirst for knowledge, truth and education. Besides the award winning suspension volumes, it’s the bookstacks and reading nooks that build the most important structure in this home. Technology and TV takes a back seat to all that is on the written page.

Another industrial meets wabi-sabi moment.
