Designers Natasha Janson and Dmitry Kirsanov of I Am Home Studio have created a playful and modern space in this 166 square meter (1786 square feet) apartment that would be sure to help any couple find their own corner of heaven in St. Petersburg. A sociable young couple not only wants to spend comfortable time in their home with each other, but should be able to entertain their circle of friends....

On the other side of the sofas lies the kitchen, which is barely there, since there aren’t a lot of cabinets on the walls. It flows with the rest of the room, not standing out, but still there, and cleverly designed. Simple textures and straight lines make it look clean and neat, but there are details like these creamy coloured flowers that just warm up the space, and the light distribution is even....

Traditionally, pastels evoke the colours of nurseries – baby pinks, blues and creamy lemon yellows that hush the children in your family. But pastels have another side. Full of light, soft and oh-so-sophisticated, pastel greys can turn the longest of curved walls into a dreamscape. The most delicate shades of mauve can colour block couches; the faintest of baby blues partition your space. Pastels can ever-so-subtly direct your eye to teal bathroom cabinets, or drench your kitchen splashback in light blue....

‘Transformer Apartment’ at 60 square meters (646 sq ft), is by no means the smallest apartment ever featured by Home Designing, but it may just be among the smartest. The one bedroom space is arranged either side of a living wall, a wall that moves, disappears, reappears and allows the space to breathe. It conceals a white recessed kitchen with minimal stainless steel fixtures and sizable sink, and reveals an in-built entertainment area complete with flat screen television and multimedia storage, which can be viewed from either the open plan kitchen, living and dining or the bedroom thanks to its ability to fully rotate on its axis....

Dark themes are great for creating a sophisticated looking home. Sometimes though, homeowners who have smaller scale apartments may shy away from darker themes in fear that it may cause their living space to appear more cramped, especially if there isn’t a huge amount of natural light to begin with. However, dark sophisticated decor can work over any room dimensions, just like the rooms of these three apartments that are all approximately just 50 sqm in area....

The homes we cover here on Home Designing scale from aspirational mansions down to compact contemporary apartments, but this home dials down the build footprint a little bit further than we have ventured before. This tiny build is a quirky construction designed by Hajjar Gibran, who has built a series of domes at his retreat center in northeast Thailand. The home we are looking at here was created with friend Steve Areen, so that Areen could set up home on Gibran’s very own mango farm, in Thailand....
