With this industrial loft, Russia-based design firm Nordes has created a truly masculine urban retreat that any bachelor would be happy to call home. While keeping many of the staunchly industrial elements , including exposed beams and bare walls, the carefully curated furnishings and bold décor make the space a home. It may go without saying that this one room loft is not intended for children, but it still manages to include plenty of playfulness – of the adult variety.
A soft leather sofa folds out and takes the apartment from entertaining space to bedroom quickly without sacrificing style.
The sunny dining area centers around a large, heavy table that uses various industrial elements, including a top made from reclaimed wood. Red metal chairs add a subtle pop of color to a mostly neutral room. A clever folding wall can hide the kitchen if so desired, or can be kept open, creating an interesting, angular awning.
Considering this loft more of a “transitional” home, the designers opted not to build out a separate closet area. Instead, a vintage trunk and repurposed lockers offer a stylish solution to the very practical concern of where to put one’s clothes.
The whole apartment is a tribute to urban creativity, and that includes the bathroom. In place of a mirror, a tongue-in-cheek statement looks back at you and tells the truth: You Look Fine. Stainless steel fixtures have a clean and almost institutional feeling.
Wood covers the floors and walls for a bit of nature in this highly man-made space. The bare wood walls give this highly polished apartment a slightly unfinished feeling. Perhaps a reminder from the designer that bachelorhood may be comfortable, but should also be temporary.
While living simply is a mantra that many deign to follow, it is generally easier said than done. Living a studio apartment was one way for Swiss designer Till Könneker to keep things simple. Unfortunately, the garden-level space did not offer much in the way of storage for his beloved record collection and other necessities – like clothes. Könneker enlisted the help of a friend to translate his idea for a “living cube” into reality. The results are nothing short of amazing.
Though the cube offers a tremendous amount of storage space, its size does not overwhelm the Bern apartment. Instead, it acts as a focal point for visitors. Tucking it away in the corner also means it does not consume valuable floor space.
A small door on the side of the cube is just large enough for Könneker to walk though, giving him easy access to his clothes and other stored items inside.
The top of the cube is far from wasted space. A thin mattress and hanging ladder make it accessible as a guest bed for visitors or a comfortable reading nook for Könneker. The windows let in ample light and offer a notable view.

The shelves surrounding the television cubby are perfectly fit to vinyl records and even have space for adding to the already ample collection that is housed there.
Könneker designed the cube himself to meet his specific need, but it was the carpented Remo Zimerli at Holzalabor that was able to turn the design into a functional and beautiful reality.
